What Gardening Equipment Should I Own?

The right gardening tools depends entirely on the type of gardening that you do and the size of your garden. Obviously if your garden is just of a few square feet in an urban environment you do not need the same set of tools that someone out in the suburbs with a massive garden needs. Similarly, if your garden is more for aesthetic purposes, like a flower garden, you may want more tools designed to care for the plants themselves; whereas if your garden is more utilitarian, like a vegetable garden, then you will want more tools designed for basic gardening as opposed to trimming and pruning the plants.

There are, however, some basic gardening tools that are essential for almost any kind of gardening. For example, regardless of the type of gardening you do, you will probably need a basic spade or shovel. These are used for digging, lifting and moving soil, shaping trenches, edging beds, and many other garden tasks. Generally most gardeners can also use a spading fork which is used for breaking and turning heavy soils and loosening subsoil layers. Another essential hand tool for almost any gardener is a hoe. Hoes are used for many different tasks, including preparing seed beds, removing weeds and breaking up top soil.

You should probably also have a few smaller hand tools that allow you to do more precision work than would be practical with the full sized hand tools described above. For example, most gardeners find having a good trowel essential to good gardening. Like the how, a trowel can be used for many different tasks, but are especially helpful for transplanting seedlings and bulbs and for digging up shallow weeds. Hand cultivators, which are often sold in sets with trowels, are great for weeding between closely spaced plants. You may also want to have your own digger, or asparagus knife, which is excellent for digging out weeds with deep roots like dandelions.
